Opening Reception 5/19/2022 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm

The mountains of North Carolina retain a rich history of woodfired ceramics that forms the foundation of the region’s vibrant contemporary practice. Western North Carolina is home to some of the field’s top artists and continues to attract valuable young voices that push the medium in exciting new pathways. This exhibition speaks to the diversity and strength of woodfiring in our region by bringing together established and emerging makers.  The exhibit highlights the quality and current trends of what’s being made in the mountains today.  As we survey the state of woodfiring in Western North Carolina, this exhibition clearly conveys that the future of woodfiring in Western North Carolina is on fire!

The Madison County Arts Council is proud to present this show!

NC Woodfired Invitational - "Then and Now" Exhibition

  • North Carolina Pottery Center (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Wood-firing is arguably the most revered and evocative of all pottery traditions. This show pays homage to North Carolina’s rich centuries-old tradition of wood-fired pottery. The exhibition showcases some great historic pieces from different regions and traditions within the state and places them in proximity to wonderful examples of more recent and contemporary pieces being made today. This juxtaposition allows the viewer to visually explore sometimes their similarities, sometimes their differences, and sometimes the similarities in their differences.

Gallery Hours: Tues–Sat: 10 am–4 pm
